How can a food forest be low maintenance?
Our designs incorporate 8 layers of perennials, varieties that grow naturally in your climate and zone, and are very low-maintenance. We use companion planting, nitrogen fixing plants, dynamic accumulators, and other methods to create an entire eco-system that nourishes the soil and takes account of your climate, so you have an abundance of food year after year! Our food forests require less maintenance than a conventional lawn.

I've planted plants that are supposed to grow in my area, but they didn't survive. How can a Food Forest Design help?
The key to your food forest is the Design. We plan an entire forest that will take care of itself, like a natural forest, with many diverse elements. We start with your soil, and plan elements that will build nutrients into your soil without your having to add them year after year. Living soil is the key to a thriving food forest. We also create a design for your individual property, taking into consideration the sun, air, and water patterns throughout the day and year.
Can I have a food forest in a desert that will survive years of drought?
Yes! We have successful installations in drought areas, as well as extreme climates. During the first 3 months your food forest needs watering in order for the roots to get established, and after that it requires little watering because we incorporate varieties that grow naturally in your climate.
Do you use any artificial chemicals or fertilizer?
No! We use natural organic materials only. We even install organically grown trees and plants when possible. A Food Forest relies on Nature, and so do we.
Do I need to test my soil?
We collect a sample to determine the percentage of sand, silt and clay before we design your food forest. We only recommend chemical soil testing if there is a suspicion that the soil is heavily contaminated.
How much does installation cost?
The average installation in the U.S.A. is ⅛ acre and costs around $18,000. Our designers and installers can work within your budget. Some installations are done in phases.
Can I do my own installation?
Yes! We recommend our trained installers, and you are also free to do your own installation.
Can I contact you afterwards if I need advice with my food forest down the road?
Yes, we'd love to hear from you! Our mission is to see food forests established all over the world, and we want yours to be successful. Extended consultations or maintenance contracts are available if you wish.
